Zaanse Schans and Volendam private tour

Working windmills along the Zaan, wooden houses and a cheese farm in the morning, the old fishing harbour of Volendam and maybe Marken in the afternoon. Both are within half an hour of Amsterdam, so the whole tour fits in about five hours.

Zaanse Schans

Windmills you can walk into

The Zaanse Schans is a neighbourhood of historic windmills, warehouses and green wooden houses on the river Zaan. Walking around is free; some windmills, workshops and the Zaans Museum charge a small entrance fee.

Arrive early in the day and you have the paths almost to yourself.

Volendam and Marken

The old Zuiderzee coast

Volendam is a lively harbour town with smoked fish stalls along the dike. Marken, a former island a short drive away, is quieter, with wooden houses and a lighthouse. Your chauffeur suggests the order depending on the time of day.
